IMHO, one of the most powerful forms of online advertising is "site specific" targeted advertising. Ads that fit lock-in-step with the overall theme and thrust of a website produce a higher credibility factor and don't require the viewer to mentally "shift gears" midstream, therefore clicking an ad becomes more natural to the click-through of the site. The Small Business Opportunity Conference is Northwestern Law School's annual
conference exploring various entrepreneurship and small business issues.
The Conference was held on Saturday, April 8, 2006 and featured high-profile, yet
not too "high brow" keynote speakers, panels and workshops covering several
aspects of entrepreneurship.

What I found refreshing about the event and Northwestern's approach with it
was that it was a real collaborative event, with people presenting from Loyola
and other organizations - not a Northwestern dominant braintrust as I've
experienced in the past. You left this event feeling educated, not just
lectured to.

Admission was free and included a full Networking Lunch, Cocktails & Dessert -
mmm...top notch.

Great news - they found the dog. I DO love golden

Hmmm... "They are counting on the dog's obvious intelligence to help him recognize that it's not a bad deal to be a beloved pet."

...Let's hope that most runaway or kidnapped children can have the same
homecoming story.

Confession time... I myself was abducted to be taken to another state
when I was 11 years old. I loved technology just as much back then - Too bad
I didn't have my walkie talkie, 'cause CB radio was about the best technology around back then.

Yes, I got back ok, only after threatening to make the car my toilet unless I
was allowed to relieve myself at a highway rest area - where I promptly and
loudly refused to get back in the car when I was done... ;-)

This week I was privileged to be in attendance at Joe Marchetti’s restaurant to meet an impressive group of business people and a company with strong convictions and belief in their products. BrainWare - the flagship product of Learning Enhancement Corporation (LEC),
( http://www.brainwareforyou.com ) is a shining example of a Midwest company pulling the right people and support together for not just new product, but a new movement, in educational products. It was also very refreshing to learn that this company funded & built itself up with committed people they know personally, not by running to the nearest venture capital firm.

The mix of individuals this evening worked like a well tuned orchestra - you had everyone from, of course, the CEO of Learning Enhancement Corporation and his section - based in Chicago on Wacker Drive, to Jann Honore, area development director for the United Negro College Fund, to "our very own" Merri Dee, Director of Community Relations and WGN-TV's Children's Charities, to Peter Kline, Author of "Why America's Children Can't Think", various Doctors of Optometry and people of other disciplines were there and finally Mr. John Schneider, of Mr. Kent in Smallville and "Bo" Duke of Dukes of Hazzard fame was there to support getting the word out about this company and it's products... Laptops running the software for all to try out......What struck me as so encouraging about Mr. Schneider was his personal belief and convictions about the product and the impact it has on the person using it. He is a genuine man who does not flippantly choose things to support, as is evidenced by his work (Approx. $3 Billion Raised) since the inception of the Children's Miracle Network ( http://www.cmn.org/ ) and his well informed comments you'll hear in our exclusive interview with him a few more minutes into this Podcast.

The numbers appear to back up these convictions. Outcomes are becoming more the rage nowadays, where the real impact can be identified both quantitatively and qualitatively. One example of outcomes, as measured by pre- and post-testing with the Woodcock-Johnson III Cognitive Battery, showed significant growth for the a testing group using BrainWare Safari: 4 years and 2 months average improvement in cognitive skills, compared to 4 months improvement for the control group. 1 year and 11 months average improvement in tests of achievement (reading and math) compared to 1 month for the control group.

Learning Enhancement Corporation earlier in the day had donated thousands of dollars worth of software and support to Jordan Community School in Chicago. The students will benefit from about 30 workstations set up with BrainWare Safari.

It's great to see a company have a heart for children in such an area of need - education - that crosses and serves all socioeconomic levels of society. It makes sense that a company like this would take root in the "Heartland".

planning and implementation. The Coleman Foundation contributed generously as a sponsor
and has continued that support to date. In 1985, the name of the conference was changed to
the Collegiate Entrepreneurs of the Midwest. After years of success and growth, Dr. Hills
conducted research into the feasibility of creating a national/global organization. In 1997, the
Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization (CEO), was launched. During the next two years, pilot
conferences were held with attendance of more than 700 students representing nearly 100 universities.
The Kauffman Foundation joined as a major sponsor in 1999. Kauffman support enabled CEO to
add full time staff, and chapters began to appear on more and more campuses across North America.
Today, CEO continues to promote its mission "to inform, support and inspire college students to be
entrepreneurial and seek opportunity through enterprise creation." The national conference in 2005
drew over 1000 collegiate entrepreneurs! What does CEO do? CEO achieves its mission through
conferences, events, a newsletter, blogs, and online networking. The CEO East Collegiate

Technology News This Week (TNOW):

Physicists announced Thursday that they now have the smoking gun that shows
the universe went through extremely rapid expansion in the moments after the
big bang, growing from the size of a marble to a volume larger than all of
observable space in less than a trillion-trillionth of a second.
The discovery — which involves an analysis of variations in the brightness
of microwave radiation — is the first direct evidence to support the
two-decade-old theory that the universe went through what is called
inflation.
Brian Greene, a Columbia University physicist, said:
"The observations are spectacular and the conclusions are stunning."
"The data favors inflation," said Charles Bennett, a Johns Hopkins
University physicist who announced the discovery. He was joined
by two Princeton colleagues, Lyman Page and David Spergel, who
also contributed to the research.
Bennett added: "It amazes me that we can say anything at all
about what transpired in the first trillionth of a second of the universe."

What would really be amazing is if they could show how
matter came to be in the first place - I seem to remember
someone saying "Let there be light!" ;-)

Papa John's Announces Sale of Perfect Pizza Chain in the United KingdomWednesday March 8, 10:00 am ET LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2006--Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA - News) today announced the sale of the Perfect Pizza brand in the United Kingdom to Smartfirst Limited. The transaction, completed as a sale of assets, included the sale of all franchise rights and leases related to 110 franchised Perfect Pizza units, as well as a distribution facility.
The purchase price was approximately $13.0 million, with $8.0 million paid in cash at closing, approximately $900,000 to be paid to Papa John's within 12 months...the company will continue to franchise and operate the Papa John's brand in the United Kingdom. There are currently 89 Papa John's restaurants in the UK (86 franchised and three company-owned units), with plans to open as many as an additional 20 Papa John's restaurants in 2006. Papa John's UK has also recently invested in point-of-sale technology and its online ordering capabilities, both intended to enhance the customer ordering experience.

The executive recruitment firm said it had an independent research firm poll 1,400 CIOs in several cities and found that the national average of CIOs who said they plan to hire IT professionals in the second quarter was 8 percent.

LONDON (Reuters) - Researchers have come up with a novel way to keep long-distance lovers in touch -- high-tech wine glasses that glow warmly however far apart the pining couple are. When either person picks up a glass, red light-emitting diodes glow on their partner's glass. When one puts a glass to their lips, the other glass glows brightly.
Distance is not a problem as liquid sensors and wireless links have been built in to the glasses.
Jackie Lee and Hyemin Chung, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's media lab in Boston, said communal drinking is a vital part of social interaction that lovebirds miss out on when separated.
Lee, whose findings were reported in New Scientist magazine Wednesday, said the wireless glasses really do "help people feel as if they were sharing a drinking experience together."
The loving cups are to be unveiled next month at a conference in Montreal on computer-human interaction.

You know, if this idea caught on during the year, there would not only be a lot more charitable giving, but better cooperation amongst like organizations - rather than competition for the same audiences and thus potential members.

This would be a nice change - because believe it or not, according to data from the Giving Source Foundation and AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy/Giving USA, only around 6% of all charitable donations come from corporate America - eclipsed by a whopping 75% given simply by individuals.

This event is a great example of what could become a trend across the nation and world if the leaders of these membership organizations were to have more open dialogue in order to find commonalities and synergies

I stopped by the the largest nanotechnology business event in the U.S. today - NanoCommerce & SEMI NanoForum, going on November 1-3, 2005 in Chicago.

Wow!

The technology world is literally reaching new heights by shrinking to new, well, lows. Small Times Magazine was there of course, covering the event and presenting many industry awards. The event itself was well organized and well attended from the slice of time I was there. Educational tracks were set up to cover both the technical and business side of this growth market that smacks of the early beginnings of the semi-conductor industry - State of the industry, Bio Pharma, Electronics, Energy, Environmental, Societal, Defense & USA Homeland Security, Deposition, Patterning, Metrology and of course, the cross-over into the semi-conductor world.

The Midwest had a strong exhibitor showing with 24 out of 48 total exhibitors from the Midwest USA - about 50%! Universities were very involved, as well as many International showings from Canada to the UK to New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Coming up in the audio Podcast is a portion of an interesting panel on Defense and Homeland Security: Nano for Soldiers - which featured having the previous main track speaker, Mr. Keith B. Ward, Ph.D., Office Director CBRNE Defense for Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA) from Washington D.C. - he's the one with a slight southern accent and a knack for illustrating and getting to the heart and point of the matter at hand in these panel discussions that had, pun intended, good chemistry.

What was encouraging to see when I visited the parallel panel on Environmental and Societal Implications is that both panels were talking about the same technologies (Ex. Detection Technology) from very different perspectives, but not without expressing a common desire that these technologies, no matter where they originated from (Academia, Defense, Private Innovations) be shared and cross-pollinate each other for the common good, since the potential for profits are boundless for all involved - not something that the Semi-conductor industry could say for very long...

The final bit of audio coverage comes from a Chicago company Arryx, Inc. which employs holographic laser steering at micro and nanoscopic levels to accelerate research and innovation in multiple disciplines. They presented a very compelling demonstration during the refreshments and networking part of the evening - which says a lot about the presenter when you consider the diametrically opposed mix of mind boggling scientific material, Amstel Light and Wine in the room!

Guido Fawkes (April 13, 1570–January 31, 1606), most commonly called Guy Fawkes,
was a member of the group of Roman Catholic conspirators who attempted to carry
out the Gunpowder Plot. The conspirators had planned to assassinate King James I
and all the members of both branches of the Parliament of England. To do this,
the House of Lords was to be blown up during the formal opening of the 1605
session of Parliament. Guy Fawkes was primarily responsible for the latter
stages of the plan's execution. He was discovered before its completion,
however. Following an interrogation, Fawkes and his co-conspirators were
executed for treason.

In the United Kingdom, Newfoundland, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, parts of
the USA, and formerly Australia, the Gunpowder Plot is commemorated annually on
Guy Fawkes Night, also called Bonfire Night. For some it is a celebration of the
plot's failure, for others it marks the loss of a folk hero.

Technology News This Week (TNOW):

USA Economic activity expanded at an energetic 3.8 percent annual rate in the
third quarter, providing vivid evidence of the economy's stamina even as it
coped with the destructive forces of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

At the same time, nearly a third of Internet users are cutting back on time
spent surfing the Internet and a quarter say they have stopped buying online
altogether, according to a study from Consumer Reports WebWatch.

Certainly, there is no direct corrolation between these two figures, but it does
seem to lean towards a conclusion that online spending, cut by 1/3, does not
bring our whole economy to a screeching halt. That's good news - the Internet is
still coming out of it's infancy in many respects - I'd rather have a mature
(online) construct to do business in than one that cannot recover quickly and
hurt the economy.

Career News This Week:

U.S. employment costs rose 0.8% in the third quarter, Wage and salary increases,
however, have fallen, coming in at a 2.3% rise in the year ended September 2005.
Hmm. Could these be related?

Check your career "oil" and run your position by a salary survey or a trusted
recruiter (oxymoron?) - you deserve to know if your lack of salary increases are
due to an internal offset for rising benefits costs.

Humorous News This Week:

Well, I'll continue with my short run of "dumber 'dan dum criminals" stories:

ZAGREB (Reuters) - A phone call to his mother led to the downfall of a suspected
German robber, who was arrested in Croatia after fleeing his homeland and
eluding police for nearly two weeks.

Croatian police said the security guard made off with 7.2 million euros he was
supposed to deliver to a German bank and fled to the Adriatic coast -- where he
had apparently always dreamed of living.

After managing to evade a police and Interpol manhunt for 10 days while hiding
out in the coastal Croatian city of Zadar, the suspect was nabbed after making a
phone call to his mother, the daily Jutarnji List reported Tuesday.

Most of the money was still in his car as he only bought some clothes and shoes,
police told the newspaper.

"We believe all the money was in the trunk of his car, but we are still counting
it," the police chief was quoted as saying.

The 38-year-old father of three had a life-long dream of buying a house on the
Adriatic sea, one of his former colleagues told the German press.

Sheesh! was Momma's boy calling her to make Momma proud?

Technology Companies Not Adding Jobs - Sector Lags Behind Rest Of Economy October 19, 2005
NEW YORK -- Technology is one of the few areas of the economy that has failed to add jobs consistently over the last 12 months. Even worse, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas, is the fact the pace of tech-sector job cutting through the third quarter is nearly 20 percent ahead of last year. During the July-through-September period, technology firms announced more than 41,000 job cuts. That's up 4.3 percent from the second quarter.
A turnaround may be coming, though. CGC Chief Executive John Challenger said spending on new software, information technology services and computer equipment is up this year and expected to increase again in 2006.

Ok - play both sides CGC - we all know there's a big budgetary "use it or lose IT" aspect to this buying in the 4th quarter of 2005 - decision-makers are throwing thechnology, not PEOPLE at attempts to solve problems. Consultants are mopping IT up with hourly rates as they pick up the slack from skeleton IT crews. Get real and hire real people.

Technology Front News This Week:
U.S. stock futures gained, suggesting a higher market open on today - Friday, after Web search company Google Inc. (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research) reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations, boosting optimism about technology shares. Google's stock rose 13 percent to a record high of $342.56 before the opening bell after it posted higher quarterly profit on Thursday. Investment companies First Albany Capital, Lehman Brothers and RBC Capital lifted their price targets on Google to $450, according to MarketWatch. It is the highest estimate to date on the stock.

Motorola Sues Former President Over Move to Nortel Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) --
Motorola Inc., the world's No. 2 maker of mobile phones, sued former President Mike Zafirovski over his decision to join Nortel Networks Corp. as chief executive officer. The suit, filed 10/18 in state court in Chicago, claims that Zafirovski violated employment agreements with Motorola by agreeing to work for another telecommunications company. The suit asks that Zafirovski be blocked from working for Nortel for two years, Brampton, Ontario-based Nortel said today in a
statement. Nortel wasn't named as a defendant in the suit.

Well, I'll say this - if (especially as a Boomer) you can hold on to your integrity while climbing up the ladder in IT - consider yourself blessed. If you can just hold on to a job in IT working under a Boomer - consider yourself extra-blessed!

Man Stops Carjacking With Hot Coffee
BLUFFTON, S.C. - A would-be carjacker got quite a jolt when he picked the wrong car to try to steal, Jasper County deputies say. The suspect tapped the window of the car Wednesday morning with a gun and motioned the driver to get out, Chief Deputy Roy Hughes said.
The driver of the car had just bought a cup of hot coffee. So he slammed his door into the carjacker's legs, threw the coffee on him possibly burning the suspect's neck and face, and wrestled him to the ground, Hughes said. A shot was fired during the scuffle, but no one was hurt. The driver managed to get the gun from the suspect and point it at him, Hughes said.
The suspect ran into the wood behind the store, the chief deputy said.

Why the woods? I suspect to relieve himself after having all that coffee...

An inspiring event - very positive and real. The venue, food, drinks and conversations were genuinely good and plenty. Pomp and circumstance replaced by humility and vision. To begin, the video greeting from Microsoft founder and CEO Bill Gates was uncanny. Why uncanny? Well, by definition it was "peculiarly unsettling" - his short talk had a refreshing humility from the west coast and a sense of bowing to the natural innovation of the "heartland" as he described Chicago. Eclipsing Bill was Mr. Casey Cowell, founder of U.S. Robotics and one of the world’s leading technology innovators, who delivered an uncommon keynote address tonight. Why uncommon? Again, by definition it's "rare, wonderful & remarkable" when a speaker can make you feel like your sitting with him and his family in their living room talking about his companies history over coffee. He also weaved in valuable bits of advice, benchmarks to strive for, and actual methods and strategies that could be practically implemented by anyone attempting to fuel innovation.

It's a testament to the heartland when speakers also sandwich their speech by mentioning their wife and family both when they begin and end their time at the podium. About family support, post event I was privileged to speak with several of the wives of the winners of these awards and it was a running half-joking comment that there could be matching "Inspiration" awards for the wives and families of these hard working "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" husbands. ;-) Finally, Mr. Cowell received the well deserved 2005 Chicago Innovation Award for Vision and Leadership.

Chicago City Council Tax Increment Financing Agreement Approval Paves Way for
University Technology Park At IIT
CHICAGO, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A Tax Increment Financing Redevelopment
Agreement approved by the Chicago City Council paves the way for the opening of
University Technology Park At IIT (UTP), on the campus of Illinois Institute of
Technology (IIT). The park, made possible by $6 million in state grants and $75
million in public and private funding, including a $25 million commitment from
IIT, marks the largest commercial investment in Chicago's South Side since the
completion of new Comiskey Park/US Cellular Field in 1991. UTP will generate
approximately 2,500 jobs at all levels of technical, professional and support
expertise over the next decade.

The University Technology Park Incubator will open this month with one-third of
the space already leased to start-up companies All Cell Technology and Solar
Phocus Technology.

"University Technology Park At IIT is an exciting opportunity to encourage

acquisitions last year, up from just $65 billion in 2002, says researcher The
451 Group." ... "When a market is young, there are enough new customers for
everybody. Once growth slows, "Companies acquire other companies to get their

together."

Bureau of Labor Statistics - Employment Situation Summary

Nonfarm payroll employment was little changed (-35,000) in September, and
the unemployment rate rose to 5.1 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of
the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.  The measures of employment and
unemployment reported in this news release reflect both the impact of Hurri-
cane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast in late August, and ongoing labor
market trends.  Over the 12 months ending in August, payroll employment grew
by an average of 194,000 a month and the unemployment rate trended downward.

Employment Rant:
Regarding this data and the Silicon Valley news of the week...

This "Big Fish" eating "Little Fish" jazz doesn't mean there is growth - only
attrition... which then can lead to malnutrition in the larger companies - you
know the kind, when you walk thru the floors of executive buildings and scores
of cubicles are bare the the bone.

Buying smaller companies doesn't buy you R&D, marketing, IT improvements or
better sales figures - investing in people does that for a company or region.

So, a word to the older set of Boomers out there who are biding their time 'till
retirement by looking savvy and buying up competitors while they make middle
managers do the job of three people - get out of the way and retire - or better
yet, take the time to mentor someone under you to take over the bloated fish
of a company you're over feeding!

Humorous News:

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is moving towards requiring owners of potentially
dangerous animals, such as crocodiles and pythons, to have microchips implanted
in their pets in case the animals get loose, officials said on Thursday.

The move follows a recent wave of incidents around the nation in which animals
such as pythons, crocodiles and giant salamanders have been found wandering
loose, frequently on the streets of densely populated cities.

In one notorious case, a man lost track of his pet python after he took the
animal "for a walk" in a park and the snake fled when the man fell asleep on a
bench. He was quoted by one TV station as saying he was surprised the snake
disappeared because it wasn't that kind of snake.

The Environment Ministry is drawing up a law that would require tiny cylindrical
microchips -- 1 centimetre (0.4 inch) long and 2 millimetres (0.08 inch) in
diameter -- implanted under the skin of some 650 animal species, a ministry
official said.

Each microchip would carry information making it possible to trace the owner if
the animal goes missing.

Hmmm...I could think of a few people that scientists might add to that
650 animal species list... ;-)

Steve Jones, Professor of Communication, Adjunct Professor of Electronic Media, Research Associate in the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois - Chicago and Adjunct Research Professor in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign, is the author of numerous books, including Doing Internet Research, CyberSociety and Virtual Culture. A social historian of communication technology, his books have earned him critical acclaim and interviews for stories in Time, the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsweek and many other newspapers and magazines. He has also been interviewed on radio and TV, and has been a guest on NPR's "Talk of the Nation" and "Sounds Like Science."

Jones earned his Ph.D. in Communications Research from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign. He is co-founder of the Association of Internet Researchers, and has made numerous presentations to scholarly and business groups about the Internet and social change and about the Internet's social and commercial uses, and serves as Senior Research Fellow to the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Jones is co-editor of New Media & Society, an international journal of research on new media, technology, and culture. He edits New Media Cultures, a series of books on culture and technology for Sage Publications, and Digital Formations, a series of books about the Internet and modern life. Only Net 2 Percent of CIO's Hiring in 2005

CHICAGO, Sept. 8 PRNewswire - A net 2 percent of chief information officers (CIOs) in the Chicago area expect to hire information technology (IT) professionals in the fourth quarter of 2005, according to the most recent Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Index andSkills Report.

Nine percent of executives surveyed plan to add staff during the quarter and 7 percent anticipate reductions inpersonnel. The net 2 percent increase is down six points from the third-quarter 2005 forecast. The majority of respondents, 81percent, foresee no change in hiring in the fourth quarter.The local results reflect a two-quarter rolling average based on the responses of 200 CIOs from a stratified random sample ofcompanies in the Chicago area with 100 or more employees; 1,400 executives were queried for thenational data. More IT hiring expected in Q3: surveyAbout 20% of New York metro area chief information officers anticipate adding full-time information technology staffers during the third quarter, while 4% expect to cut IT jobs , according to a survey commissioned by Robert Half Technologies.

The 16% net result tops the second-quarter figure by three percentage points and is five points higher than the national average.

Robert Half, which has been tracking IT hiring activity in the U.S. since 1995, polled 1,400 executives nationwide, including 200 in New York City; Long Island; Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties; Fairfield, Conn.; northern and central New Jersey; and Pike, Pa.

The local results reflect a rolling average of responses over two quarters.
